Common Causes of Hair Damage and Split Ends, and How To Avoid Them

Written by

Here at Steve Hilliard Hairdressing, we have a team of hairdressers in Luton and Ampthill that are committed to giving you the best possible hairdressing experience. That’s why we have our 4 point guarantee:

  1. We guarantee we’ll listen carefully, so we can understand exactly what you want.
  2. We guarantee to give you the time you need, so you never feel rushed or taken for granted.
  3. We guarantee to give you the advice you need, so you can be confident in the choices you make.
  4. We guarantee when you leave the salon, you’ll know how to look after your hair until we see you again.

That’s why we write blogs just like this one, helping you to look after your hair between visits to our hairdressers in Luton and Ampthill. Read below about the common causes of hair damage and split ends, and how best to avoid them…

Split ends and damage can make your hair appear dry, dull and lifeless. Unlike shedding that can fluctuate based on factors out of your control, common causes of hair damage are more well know and there are things you can do to reduce it.

Here are five of these common causes, and our tips on avoiding them:

1. Not having regular haircuts.

The ends of your hair are the oldest, so they tend to be thinner and have been through more stress than parts of your hair closer to your roots. This can cause split ends to occur, and whilst it’s perfectly normal for split ends to form, the longer you leave them the more your hair becomes damaged. Your hair may split another time (making three strands) or it may work its way further up your hair.

Our tip: The best way to avoid split ends damaging your hair further is by having regular haircuts at your hairdressers in Luton. This will keep those split ends at bay and ensure the ends of your hair are as healthy as can be!

2. Brushing your hair.

Whilst brushing hair is unavoidable, the way you brush your hair and what you choose to brush it with can have a big impact on the amount of damage done to your hair. This applies particularly when your hair is wet, as that is when your hair is most fragile.

Our tip: The best way to limit damage to your hair caused by brushing is to use a wide-toothed comb. Start from your ends and move up your hair as it detangles. Remember to be gentle and don’t rip the comb through your hair.

3. Heat styling (yes we know it’s unavoidable but let us explain…)

It’s no secret that heat styling makes strands weaker over time, making hair more prone to damage. So what can you do to reduce the damage of heat styling to your hair?

Our tip: Firstly, turn down the temperature a bit. Many of us opt for the hottest setting on our heat styling tools when it is simply not needed. Turn down the temperature – your strands will thank you for it! Secondly, make sure you are using a good quality heat protectant. Many of the styling products by KMS California and Goldwell create fabulous locks as well as offering heat protection during the styling process.

We hope you found this blog both interesting and useful! If you want any further information and advice on this topic, feel free to ask our stylists at our hairdressers in Luton and Ampthill.

Six Fabulous Tips for Healthier Hair

Written by

Your hair is a massive part of your appearance, so we know you’ll be wanting it to look it’s best! A big part of how great your hair looks actually comes down to how healthy your hair is.

Many of our clients come into our hairdressers in Luton and ask our stylists, ‘How can I get healthier looking hair?’. Whilst it can’t be achieved immediately, there are a few things that you can do to help your hair both look better and be healthier.

Here are 6 tips to help you get healthier hair…

1. Get your hair cut regularly.

This is the most important tip of all in our opinion! Having your hair cut every 6-8 weeks is crucial to keeping your hair healthy, no matter what it’s length. If you leave it too long between hair appointments, split ends will start to build up and this will cause your hair to look damaged and it will inhibit it’s growth. If you are looking for a hairdressers in Luton to regularly trim your hair to keep it healthy, pop in and see us in our Luton salon!

2. Don’t brush your hair whilst wet.

When your hair is wet, it is much more fragile than usual and breaks easily. Avoid brushing your hair immediately after you wash it. If your hair is prone to tangling and needs to be detangled after you wash it, choose to use a wide-tooth comb. This doesn’t tug and pull your hair like a brush does.

3. Sleep on a silk pillowcase.

Most of us choose to sleep on a cotton pillowcase, but there are many advantages to switching to silk – one of them being that it’s better for your hair! Cotton has a tendency to rob moisture from your hair and is much harsher on your hair too. For your hair, investing in a silk pillowcase is definitely worth the extra expense!

4. Use the right hair products for your hair.

There are so many hair products out there for you to choose from, so how do you know which are right for you? The best thing is to ask one of our stylists at our hairdressers in Luton, they’re the experts! We love products by Goldwell and KMS California, and highly recommend their products to all our clients. If your hair is damaged currently, check out the KMS California Moist Repair range. Perfect for replenishing moisture and repairing damage! We stock a fantastic range of products from both Goldwell and KMS California at our hairdressers in Luton.

5. Eat a healthy and balanced diet.

What you eat has a greater effect on the healthiness of your hair than you’d probably expect! The health of your hair is vastly dependent on the nourishment you give it. Try to eat a diet that is high in protein, vitamins and minerals, and this will help your hair stay healthy. If you are trying to grow your hair, here are a few foods that will enhance hair growth: green leafy vegetables, beans, seeds, fish and chicken.

6. Drink more water.

You’ll have heard this a million times before, but water is vital for many areas of your body’s health. From clearer skin, to weight loss, to healthier hair – water is key! Try to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, as this will keep your hair properly hydrated.

How to Find the Right Hairdressers in Luton

Written by

There’s many things that are difficult in life, and finding the right hairdresser is one of them! We’ve probably all experienced going to a new hairdresser and not having our hair styled as we’d like it. It’s not only that, but so many things contribute to your experience at the hairdressers – environment, friendliness of staff, waiting times, music, etc.

Here at Steve Hilliard Hair, we aim to give you the best hairdressing experience you can find in Luton and we understand how important this is to our clients. Our salon is modern, stylish and well equipped; you’ll get complimentary refreshments and enjoy free wi-fi; and with our 4-point guarantee you can ensure you leave our salon with the hair you want and know how to look after your hair before you next visit us.

To help you find the perfect hairdressers in Luton for you, we have put together 4 tips for things you should look at when considering a salon.

Here goes…

1. Look at their social media pages

Almost all hairdressers in Luton will have a social media page in today’s age. This can give you a great feel for what the salon is all about. Many hairdressers in Luton will also post pictures of some of their recent work and images of their staff and salon. Be sure to check these out! Comments from clients on these social media pages will also give you an idea about how happy their clients are.

2. Check out their special offers

Most hairdressers in Luton will have special offers that they advertise on their social media pages and on their website. See if any of these special offers appeal to you, and they may run other special offers that you can take advantage of in the future. For example, we have two very popular special offers which are our Student Tuesday’s and our Colour Difference Days.

3. See what their clients say

If their current clients are getting the hair they desire and are enjoying their hairdressing experience, there’s a high chance that you will too! If you visit their social media pages you’ll probably be able to see reviews from clients, and many will also post testimonials on their website. You can see testimonials for our hairdressers in Luton here. This may also help you choose which particular hairdresser at that salon you would like to use.

4. Pop in

Back in the day, this would be the first thing you would do but now it’s seems to be the last thing we think of! This is the best way to see what the salon is like, and meet some of the staff. You’ll also be able to see some of the work they are doing whilst you are there. Here at Steve Hilliard Hairdressing in Luton, we offer a free consultation to help you build a relationship with your chosen hairdresser and ensure they fully understand how you like your hair.

We hope these four things help you find your perfect hairdressers in Luton. We would love to welcome you to our Luton salon and will always have a warm welcome waiting for you!

Your hair needs Revival Creme

Written by

Revival Cream

Revival creme restores moisture, balances the hair, instantly improves manageability and controls static and fly away hair.

It is great to take away on holiday and even to add onto dry hair and helps to calm down your hair.

You can use it with conditioner or on its own as a leave in but will not way your hair down at all!

Do not leave home without it!

Going on holiday?

Written by

Hi all,

Welcome to my blog on hair treatments. These are so important especially this time of year now the sun is coming out and we are all feeling much better! I would definitely recommend our brand new treatment menu below.

I would recommend a treatment before you go on holiday as it will nourish your hair for the fun time in the sun. Most customers will have a post holiday treatment which is great but you are best to have pre and a post holiday treatment. So when you are in the salon speak to your stylist about your treatment.

Remember your leave in conditioners or an in salon treatment to take away with you to use by the pool. You should always get your hair saturated in a treatment by the pool as the heat makes the treatment penetrate through the cuticle and starts repairing your hair.

You can see them in the salon on your next visit and help your holiday be even more special!

How to get volume in your hair

Written by

Welcome to my blog on Volume.

This is an area at SHH we specialise in.

With the kms range they have a fabulous range of products. The Volume shampoo is amazing and along with leave in conditioner. This product is fantastic! It does not weigh the hair down at all and many clients will always use a cream based conditioner on fine hair and it makes the hair go limp. So your blow dry is flat.

If you use the volume mousse or spray with the shampoo and leave in conditioner so using 3 of the range you will get 75% MORE VOLUME yes you heard me 75%!

The mousse is so light, it is just like snow it melts in your hand and will not leave your hair sticky like the old mousses.

If you would like to email any questions please send it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. using the subject: Volume

Thanks for reading my blog and I really hope it has helped you understand what to use on your hair.

Kind regards
